DRAGON QUEST MANGA ROTO SERIES
The series was collected in 21 tankobon volumes originally.Įmblem of Roto (manga) was very successful in Japan, to the point of spawning a drama CD, an animated film and several books related to the series. It was first serialized in the magazine Monthly Shonen Gangan by Enix from issue #4 of 1991 to issue #8 of 1997. It was written by Chiaki Kawamata for the setting and by Junji Koyanagi for the script, while the art was done by Kamui Fujiwara. The comic tells the story of Arus Roto, a direct descendant of Arel, the hero of Dragon Quest III, and his efforts to restore peace to the World. In addition, we find everything that constitutes the realm of fantasy to begin with creatures and other demons, different classes of characters or even the main quest of the hero.Ī first volume extremely classic, but not uninteresting for all that and especially promising for the upcoming sequel.Emblem of Roto, fully titled Dragon Quest Saga: Emblem of Roto (ドラゴンクエスト列伝 ロトの紋章, Dragon Quest Retsuden: Roto no Monsho, translated as Dragon Quest Biography: Emblem of Roto) and also known as - Dragon Quest: Emblem of Roto or Emblem of Roto: Dragon Quest Saga, is a Japanese comic series based on the Roto trilogy of the Dragon Quest series. The absence of magic about it (ubiquitous in games as well as the previous adaptations) doesn't really matter as it is here minimized by certain techniques of Li and illustrated by the mangaka as if it were magic attacks. It is assumed that this state of facts will, however, set in the following tomes. This is one of the pitfalls of this volume, which multiplies the clichés inherent in the genre (amnesia of the hero, his inner struggle telling them not to kill…) and that by going too quickly, minimizes finally, the empathy for the characters that is just being discovered. One detail, however, as much as reading this first volume is particularly nice, despite the big impression of déjà-vu. We don't say as much about the chara design of all the characters, Aros are quite common while the look of his friend Li remains rather bland. On this point, include fighting dynamic, very well cut and perfectly legible. It is in this environment for the more bearable as our story begins, drawn by Kamui Fujiwara are already at work on Emblem of Roto. Following this victory, this begat the disappearance of magic spells, and secondarily of the Royal Family, causing chaos in the world. So far, the base is still very classic because of the victory of the three heroes, Lua, Alan and Aster, on the demon King Zoma 25 years ago. The blood spatters at times, and it must be confessed that the tone is interesting, as cutting edge (no pun intended) radically with Dai or the previous set of Roto. Thus, at the end of the first volume, Aros, rediscovers its past as a crown prince, after gaining two childhood friends and this on the bottom of several confrontations or passages is decidedly darker than what we had used the previous adaptations. The positive point of this first volume of the Heirs of the Emblem is that it does not lose really even if, as we shall see a little later, it also leads to frustration. The review here this concerns only the Volume 1.Īlthough opting for a more radical approach, the manga begins in a manner quite conventional in presenting us with a group of thieves made up of several individuals including the young Aros, who has lost his memory. 10 volumes are out in France and the 11th is expected shortly. The series ended in Japan with the 34th volume.
